Former US President Clinton Meets Geldof and Bono in Ireland

23 May 2001
Bono and Bob Geldof were among hundreds of famous Irish faces at Dublin Castle last night to greet former President Bill Clinton.

The Irish Independent reports that some of the country's best-known actors, musicians, entertainers and politicians turned out to honour Mr Clinton, with all proceeds from the gala dinner going to the Northern Ireland Fund for Reconciliation.

Bob Geldof, MC for the night, said the evening was a lap of honour for Mr Clinton, a valedictory send-off. The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, said that after so many visits on both sides of the Atlantic 'we in Ireland have come to see President Clinton not just as a statesman of great vision and ability but as a true friend.'
