Alternative Elevation Support Acts Unveiled

20 Mar 2001
Greenpeace, Amnesty International and Drop the Debt, three campaigning organisations long supported by U2, will be travelling with the Elevation 2001 Tour.

Fans will be able to meet volunteers from the different groups, pick up literature and join in the latest actions.

To mark the start of the tour in Miami this weekend, Greenpeace International have launched a a special U2 area on their own site, which will keep fans up to date with latest environmental actions.

Greenpeace are also launching a cyberaction aimed at preserving the threatened British Columbia forests.

The organisation is inviting U2 fans to ask the CEO of International Forest Products (Interfor), the number one destroyer of pristine temperate rainforests, to save the Kermode spirit bear (pictured above) and stop logging Princess Royal Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Amnesty International and Greenpeace have been guests of U2 on international tours since the mid-eighties and the band have regularly highlighted their activities in tour programmes, on album sleeves and in interviews.

Drop the Debt, the campaign to cancel the debts of the world's poorest countries, has been a focus of band interest for the last two years - with Bono in particular taking a high profile.
